National Emergency Alert System test on Wednesday, November 9, 2011

On Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at 1 PM CST, there will be a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS). Although there have been various media reports that the test will last up to three and a half minutes, information from the FCC and FEMA indicates that the test will last a mere 30 seconds.

According to FEMA, there has never been a national activation of the EAS despite its frequent use by State and local governments for weather alerts and other emergencies. FEMA notes that while the audio message will be the same for all EAS Participants, the video test message scroll may not be the same or even indicate that “This is a test." In any case, you should expect interruptions on television, radio, cable, and satellite shows.

Another Halloween inspired activity is the Theatre-Hikes at the Morton Arboretum every weekend in October and Columbus Day. Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day on Saturday

If you have ever been to the Smithsonian Museums in Washington, DC, you are aware that most, if not all, offer free admission every day. This Saturday, September 24, 2011, a number of museums are opening their doors to anyone presenting a Museum Day Ticket for free. How do you get one of these ticket? Just go to Smithsonianmag.com and download a ticket to the museum of your choice. In Illinois, there are 34 museums participating, including the Adler Planetarium, The Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the National Veterans Art Museum. Some rules do apply:

Only an official Museum Day ticket is eligible for free entry.
One ticket per household, for two people.
A ticket will gain entry to only one of the participating museums, excluding parking and special events and exhibits.

As promised a few months ago, MyMediaMall is now compatible with the Amazon Kindle or with the Kindle apps for Apple or Android devices. I checked out a couple of books and it was amazingly easy.

If you have a Kindle or Kindle app on your smartphone, here's what you do: Go to the Morton Grove Public Library website and scroll down the page to the MyMedia Mall icon and click on that icon.

At the top right of the page, click Sign In. You will select Morton Grove Public Library and enter your library barcode (with no spaces). Now click on the image of the Kindle (see above left) and find a book that you are interested in checking out. To limit your choices to only those titles that are currently available, click on the box labeled "Show only titles with copies available" and click Submit (see right).

You make your selection and check-out the books as usual. Once you have checked-out the book, you will see a button labeled "Get for Kindle", click that button and it will take you to Amazon where you will find an image of the book you checked-out with a yellow button to the right that says "Get library book". Clicking that button will take you to your Amazon sign-in page and when you sign in, you will see a button that gives you a choice of which Kindle device to send the book. If you do not see the title added immediately to your device, go to Manage Your Kindle and you should see the title listed with a yellow notation stating "public library." Click on the Actions button and select the "Deliver to my" link and choose your device. It should begin downloading to your device immediately.

Founders' Day -- The National Park Service is 95 Years Old

When Yellowstone, the first National Park, was established in 1872, responsibility for balancing public access with the prevention of poaching and natural resource destruction fell to the U.S. Army. This changed on August 25, 1916 when President Woodrow Wilson approved an an act of Congress creating the National Park Service. The act directed the new agency to

"conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wild life [in the national parks] and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations."

Today the National Park Service safeguards almost 400 National Parks that contain natural landmarks, historic sites, archeological sites, museum collections, and endangered species.

Rhubarb: Something for Nothing

My backyard “something for nothing” rhubarb patch is the horticultural equivalent of finding a $5 bill under a sofa cushion. Its progenitor was grimly handed over the fence after our neighbors’ battled it with a rototiller (not recommended). Despite its availability in some local grocery store produce sections and farmers' markets, some people apparently resort to less savory tactics for satisfying their rhubarb jones. I once heard a local resident complain that someone had been shamelessly pilfering her rhubarb patch through her alley fence.

Rhubarb leaves, whether raw or cooked, contain high levels of poisonous toxins. Without the addition of sugar, the stalks of the plant (which can be eaten) are very sour. In The First Four Years, Laura Ingalls Wilder recounted an embarrassing incident when, as a young newlywed, she omitted sugar in a batch of "pie plant" (rhubarb) pies baked for a hungry threshing crew:

“Mr. Perry, a neighbor of Laura’s parents, tasted his first. Then he lifted the top crust, and reaching for the sugar bowl, spread sugar thickly over his piece of pie. “That is the way I like it,” he said. “If there is no sugar in the pie, then every fellow can sweeten his own as much as he likes without hurting the cook’s feelings.”

You'll find rhubarb's split personality reflected in Morton Grove Public Library collection. For warnings and cautionary tales about the dangerous leaves, MGPL readers can check out Wicked Plants: The Weed That Killed Lincoln's Mother & Other Botanical Atrocities and The North American Guide to Common Poisonous Plants and Mushrooms. Both books mention the same unfortunate story about rhubarb leaf cooking tips during World War I in Great Britain.

Anyone browsing the indexes of cookbooks in our library's 641.5 section will discover a number of recipes using rhubarb's edible stalks. The New Best Recipe has a recipe for Strawberry Rhubarb Pie. Martha Stewart, naturally, gets in on the act with sauces, compotes, and pudding in The Martha Stewart Living Cookbook : The New Classics. Adventurous rhubarb lovers may want to adapt recipes to exploit their backyard bumper crop. For example, try substituting diced rhubarb for the tart cherries in the Apple Cherry Crisp recipe in Moosewood Restaurant Low-Fat Favorites.

Kontomble Ensemble to Perform

Stop and listen to the music. On Sunday, July 31, 2011 the Morton Grove Public Library will be presenting the rich sounds of the Kontomble Ensemble. You'll hear African music, drumset, old and modern rudimental/marching snare and bass drum, rag time music with a xylophone soloist, solo pieces on marimba and a fun rhythmic vocal piece.

This quartet of musicians formed the group while students at Northwestern University and will highlight a wide variety of percussion instruments and share interesting facts and history as they take you on a musical percussive journey in this amazing concert.

In 2009, Morton Grove Public Library staff and patrons made hundreds of paper beads to design the dress seen on the left. We are ready to try our hand at creating a ball gown made from newspaper as MGPL’s entry in the 2011 Trashy Fashion Show.

The focus of this project is to take “garbage” — materials destined for a landfill - and turn them into artistic fashions. At least 90% of the main outfit must be compiled of found items, reused objects or recyclables (no food waste). Each designer or team must create a main outfit and three complimentary accessories.

On Saturday, July 23, 2011 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, we will be holding Get Hooked Crafts: Making Flowers from Newspaper and begin the process of creating a ball gown for the SWANCC’s Trashy Fashion Show to be held on Thursday, November 17, 2011, at 7:00 pm. Consider stopping at the Library to make a flower or two or three or more. Get out of the heat and do something for the planet at the same time.

Carnival at Maine East High School

What does summer mean besides sunny days and hot weather? Carnivals! Those fun events that are set up in a parking lot or field full of rides, amusements and food are a true harbinger of summer fun. This weekend at Maine East High School, the Maine East High School Athletic Boosters are holding their first-ever carnival. With more than 20 rides, games and live music entertainment, this might be the place to be this weekend. The dates and times are Friday 7/22 from 6pm-10pm, Saturday 7/23 from Noon to 10pm and Sunday 7/24 from Noon to 6 pm.

Heat Advisory Warning for the Area

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory Warning for the Chicago area. It is important to remember that excessive heat kills more people every year than floods, tornadoes, and lightning strikes together.

What does that mean for you and me? By definition, a heat advisory warning means that there is an extreme heat index making it feel hot, typically between 105 and 110 °F (41 and 43 °C) for up to 3 hours during the day and at or above 80 °F (27 °C) at night for two consecutive nights. To be safe, there are steps to take:

Slow down, and reduce strenuous activity. Mow the lawn or garden in the early morning or late evening instead of midday.
Dress in lightweight, nonrestrictive, light-colored clothing.
Drink plenty of water or other nonalcoholic fluids.

If you must be outside or in non-air conditioned buildings, make sure to drink at least 2 8-ounce glasses of water every hour.

Eat light, easy-to-digest foods.
Seek out shade if you have to be outdoors for extended periods. Spend more time in air-conditioned places.
Check on elderly neighbors, friends and relatives to make sure they are okay.
When outside, take frequent dips in the ocean or pool, or mist yourself with a water bottle. When inside, take frequent cool baths or showers and use cold compresses to cool off.
Apply high-SPF sunscreen frequently when outdoors.
Seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms of heat illness.

Remember, the Library is a cooling center. Come join us for a program or just to sit and read a book.

Because Swan Lake requires a dancer who can play both the White Swan with innocence and grace, and the Black Swan, who represents guile and sensuality. Love in the Afternoon - A Friday Matinee

Adapted from the Nicholas Sparks novel of the same name, The Notebook is the story of a poor young man who falls in love with a rich young woman. Soon separated by her disapproving parents and their social differences, the two never forget each other and many years later, they meet up again and the young woman must choose between her new love and her first love.

The Notebook will be shown at 2:00 pm on Friday, June 17, 2011 in the Baxter Auditorium. This 2004 film stars Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams, Gena Rowlands, and James Garner. It is rated PG-13 and runs 124 minutes.

June Featured Film - 127 Hours

On Thursday, June 16, 2011 the Morton Grove Public Library will be showing the 2010 Academy Award nominated film, 127 Hours, starring James Franco, Amber Tamblyn, Treat Williams, and Kate Burton. This film will be shown twice, at 2:00 pm and again, at 7:00 pm.

127 Hours is the true story of Aron Ralston's remarkable adventure to save himself after a fallen boulder crashes on his arm and traps him in an isolated canyon in Utah while mountain climbing. Over the next five days Ralston examines his life and survives the elements to discover he has the courage to extricate himself by any means necessary, scale a 65 foot wall and hike over eight miles before he can be rescued.

Are You Entitled to Unclaimed Money?

Today on one of the morning shows, the discussion was on Unclaimed Money and how you can find out if some of it belongs to you. It was an interesting story about a woman in West Virginia who learned that her mother had purchased a CD (certificate of deposit) years before and after the death of the mother, the money was sent to unclaimed property. Imagine her surprise when the West Virginia State Treasurer showed up with a check for over $14,000!

This reminded me that the State of Illinois has an unclaimed property program called Cash Dash. Have you ever checked the database to see if you or any of your relatives have money that you forgot about and is due you?

And what should you do to make sure that everything you own stays with you or your heirs?

Make a list of all accounts - include the obvious ones like checking and savings accounts, but make sure to include stocks, bonds, life insurance policies (those you purchase and those that are part of your employment package), CDs, savings bonds, brokerage accounts, accidental death policies, pensions (from current and former jobs), 401(k)s, IRAs and any other financial assets you own.

Check for unclaimed money in deceased relatives' names - check all states where your relatives lived, although it isn't a bad idea to check out all 50 states because businesses might bank in a state that your relative did not live while working for that company.

Check out MissingMoney (for an almost-nationwide search) or the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators to see if you have unclaimed money, you might be surprised because in the time it took to write this post, I found unclaimed money for 2 of my living relatives and they are in the process of claiming their money.

As the weather heats up, the Morton Grove Public Library offers a chance to relax in air-conditioned splendor while watching films and documentary. This Thursday, June 9, 2011 beginning at 2:00 pm the Library will be showing a double-feature of documentaries: Between the Folds: A Film about Finding Inspiration in Unexpected Places and NOVA: Dogs Decoded: Understanding the Human-Dog Relationship.

Between the Folds: A Film about Finding Inspiration in Unexpected Places is an award-winning documentary that depicts a cast of fine artists and eccentric scientists from MIT and NASA, who have devoted their lives to the unlikely medium of modern origami. Through their determination to reinterpret the world in paper, they arouse a fascinating mix of sensibilities towards art, form, expressiveness, creativity and meaning. This film was released in 2008, is not rated and runs for 55 minutes.

Immediately following at 3:00 pm, NOVA: Dogs Decoded: Understanding the Human-Dog Relationship will be shown. Revealing the science behind the remarkable bond between humans and their dogs, this film also investigates new discoveries in genetics that are illuminating the origin of dogs with big implications for the evolution of human culture as well. Tornado and flood seasons have begun in the Midwest, and many residents have plans in place to protect themselves and their families. But pet owners know that their pets might be in danger during many other kinds of emergencies, too. For all the times owners are prevented from getting home, must take shelter in their home, or are forced to evacuate, they'll need emergency plans for their pets.

Fortunately, the Humane Society of the United States has done much of the groundwork here. Check their guide to Disaster Preparedness for Pets when you want to be sure that you've covered all the bases for your pet's safety at home alone or in shelter with you.

Are you a history buff? Do you ever wonder what a place looked like in the past? There is a new website, WhatWasThere.com. that will help you see into the past. This website ties historical photos with Google Maps to let you see how current streets or buildings or locations looked in the past. This is a work-in-progress but you can participate. If you have photos from the past, you can register on the website, upload your photos, tag the photo with the location and year and then map it with Google Maps. If you are just interested in seeing what has already been loaded to this website, type in a location and see what was there. Chicago has over 700 photos loaded already.

Former MG Mayor Cast Historic Vote to Ban the Sale of Handguns

The Chicago Tribune reported today that Richard Hohs, former trustee and mayor of the Village of Morton Grove, died at his home in Florida on April 13, 2011.

In 1981, Morton Grove was thrust into the national spotlight when Mr. Hohs and four other trustees voted to ban the sale of handguns in the Village. At the same time, those other trustees also voted to ban the possession of handguns in the Village, making Morton Grove the first municipality in the nation to outlaw handguns.

Later on, as mayor of the Village from 1988-1996, Mr. Hohs defended the ban, although the Village Board voted to repeal it in July of 2008 soon after the Supreme Court overturned a similar ban on handguns in the District of Columbia.

The Library maintains a complete chronology of events, a binder of newspaper clippings, and a summary of the clippings, all in print, surrounding the historic handgun legislation in Morton Grove. You can also view much of this information online, as well as, a nice list of the Library's books on the issue of gun control.

Are you paying too much for your telephone service? If you are paying more than $25 per month for phone service, you're probably paying too much. The Morton Grove Public Library and the Citizens Utility Board (CUB) have joined together as part of MoneySmart Week Chicago to offer a program on two different days to help you understand your phone bill and decide what services you really need and what you can do without.

The first program will be held on Tuesday, April 5, 2011. Beginning at 11:30am there will be a presentation by a Citizens Utility Board counselor giving an overview about the rules of phone service. Immediately following that brief presentation, there will be a clinic when counselors from the Citizens Utility Board will review and analyze your phone billsso please bring a copy of your phone bill with you.

Appraiser Karl Gates will give a brief overview about collecting and selling antiques; trends in design, color, and style; and criteria used in evaluating collectibles. This database provides a one-stop location to research recalls and reports on a variety of products, including electronics, appliances, home furnishings, tools, etc. as well as a place to file a report on an unsafe product. Are You Prepared?

With the recent earthquakes in Japan and New Zealand, and the approaching tornado season in the Midwest, now is the perfect time to make sure that you have an emergency preparedness kit ready in the event of a disaster. It is recommended that you have a separate kit prepared for home, work and your car.

For your home, your disaster supplies kit should contain essential food, water, and supplies for at least three days. You should keep this kit in a designated place and have it ready to grab quickly in case you have to leave your home. It is important that all family members know where the kit is kept.

At work, you should make sure to have an easy "grab & go" container in case you are evacuated from your workplace. It is important to make sure you have food and water in the kit and be sure to have comfortable walking shoes at work, in case an evacuation requires walking long distances.

You should keep a kit of emergency supplies in each of your cars. These kits should contain food, water, first aid supplies, flares, jumper cables.

Ebooks have been around for 40 years? They date back to 1971 when Michael Hart, founder of Project Gutenberg, digitized the the Declaration of Independence creating the first "e-book." On March 1st Project Gutenberg digitized it's 40,000 e-book.

Great Lakes Brass Ambassadors at MGPL

Music has a long tradition in the military and the Morton Grove Public Library is pleased that the Brass Ambassadors - Naval Band Great Lakes will be performing on Sunday, March 6, 2011 at 2:00 pm in the Baxter Auditorium.

The U.S. Naval Band Great Lakes is celebrating its 100th anniversary. The band began in 1911 and provided ceremonial musical support for boot camp graduations. By 1917, the band had grown to 241 members and Lieutenant John Philip Sousa, USNR, was appointed Director of Music, Great Lakes Naval Training Station and asked to increase the size and scope of Navy music by creating a Music School. Established in 1982 and led by MU2 Kurt Zemaitaitis, the Brass Ambassadors will play a variety of musical styles, including classical, march and Dixieland compositions. More information is available about U.S. Naval Band Great Lakes or if you are interested in a career as a Naval musician.

Did you see Karen O'Hara, former Morton Grove resident, win an Oscar for Art Direction at the Academy Awards last night? She was a co-winner, along with Robert Stromberg (production design) for her outstanding set decoration for the 2010 film, Alice in Wonderland. And it's not the first time she was nominated! Twenty-five years ago, she was up for her work on the Martin Scorsese film, The Color of Money.

A new MoneySmart Kid will be announced at the MoneySmart Week kick-off breakfast on April 4, 2011 at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and will be awarded a $5,000 scholarship. Do you want to be that MoneySmart Kid?

If you are in grades 5 through 8, complete the MoneySmart Kid application, write a 350-word essay answering the following question, "You have been asked to give your class a short lesson on the importance of financial literacy. According to universe.jobs, the new TLD will provide "companies a simple, fast, and consistent method to communicate the exact online destination of their jobs page to job seekers using the Internet." According to a recent story on NPR's Morning Edition, the charge for posting jobs on sites such as Monster and careerbuilder.com may limit the number of opening positions companies can afford to advertise. In contrast, employers can use .jobs to post job openings free of charge.

You can try out the new domain in several interesting ways:

Every Monday afternoon beginning at 3:00 pm, the Morton Grove Public Library is offering a chance for knitters to get together and work on their favorite hobby, knitting. Of course, crocheters are welcomed, too. Ronnie Rund facilitates the group and is available to help you with your knotty problems.

The group meets in the lower level of the Library from 3:00 to 4:00 pm every Monday and you are welcome to stick around as the Knitting Club for ages 6 and above starts at 4:00 pm. So bring your knitting sticks and string and join in for a relaxing hour or two.

Valentine's Day is less than a week away and the Morton Grove Public Library is gearing up by offering some romantic programs.

On Friday, February 11, 2011 at 1:00 pm. we will be showing the film Murphy's Romance starring James Garner and Sally Fields. This endearing comic love story tells the story of a gutsy divorced mother eager to make it as a horse trainer on a small desert ranch where she is courted by the town's most eligible widower and her ne'er-do-well ex-husband. The film was released in 2000, is not rated and runs 107 minutes.

On Sunday, February 13, 2011, the Morton Grove Public Library is pleased to present a holiday concert: From the Heart: A Valentine's Concert with Myles and Ray at 2:00 pm. Myles Greene and Ray Lozano will dazzle you with romantic songs made famous by Frank Sinatra, Johnny Mathis, Willie Nelson and many more stars of stage and screen.

Both events will be held in the Baxter Auditorium.

Are you a MoneySmart Kid?

The MoneySmart Week partners are looking for a MoneySmart Kid. What does that mean? If you are in 5th through 8th grade, live in Chicago or the surrounding suburbs and are interested in winning money for college and a laptop computer, all you need to do is write an essay answering this question, "You have been asked to give your class a short lesson on the importance of financial literacy. What would you say and why?"

On Saturday, January 29, 2011 from 10:00 am - 12:30 pm, the Library is converting the Baxter Auditorium into a greeting card studio with a variety of stations for you to use. Assistance and instruction as well as supplies will be provided for making Valentine cards for the special people in your life. You can print from a computer, use stamps, cut-outs, and a wide variety of artistic techniques to create customized cards. No experience necessary, while supplies last.

This is a great chance for the family to make holiday cards for one another.

Finding Help at Tax Time

Once again, it is time to pull together all of our financial records for the previous year and begin the task of preparing our tax return. The first thing you should do is check out the IRS website. On this site, you will find free tax help, including free file, interactive tax assistance, volunteer tax preparers, and more. On the IRS New Media page, where you can watch videos or listen to audio podcasts to help answer your tax questions.

Tax forms are no longer being mailed out and are not available at post offices or the Morton Grove Public Library but you can download the forms you need from any computer by going to the Forms & Publications page of the IRS website. It is also possible to order paper copies of the forms you need from the IRS to be delivered by the U. S. Postal Service by filling out the form provided by the IRS.

Important dates to be aware of this year, because of the late passage of the tax bill last December, are February 14, 2011 is when the IRS will begin processing tax returns and all tax returns must be mailed by April 18, 2011.

Movies, do we have movies! That's right, the Morton Grove Public Library is showing several movies during the upcoming week. On Thursday, January 20, 2011 at 2:00 and 7:00 pm, we are showing the 2010 movie, Winter's Bone. Seventeen-year-old Ree Dolly sets out to track down her father who put their house up for his bail bond and then disappeared. If she fails to find him, she and her family will be turned out into the Ozark woods. Challenging her outlaw kin's code of silence and risking her life, Ree hacks through the lies, evasions, and threats offered up by her relatives and begins to piece together the truth.This movie is rated R and runs 100 minutes. Cast: Jennifer Lawrence, John Hawkes, Kevin Breznahan, and Dale Dickey.

On Friday, January 21, 2011 at 2:00 pm, the classic Barbra Streisand movie, Funny Girl will be shown. This movie follows the early career of stage comedienne Fanny Brice. Barbra Streisand won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award as best actress for her role in Funny Girl in 1968. The movie is rated G and runs 155 minutes. Cast: Barbra Streisand, Omar Sharif, Kay Medford, Anne Francis, and Walter Pidgeon.

Sunday, January 23, 2011 the Critics Choice Cinema will be showing How I Ended This Summer. (Russian with English subtitles, 2010, NR, 130 min.) On a desolate island in the Arctic Circle, two men work at a small meteorological station, taking readings from their radioactive surroundings. Sergei, a gruff professional in his fifties, takes his job very seriously. His new partner, bright eyed college grad Pavel, retreats to his MP3 player and video games to avoid Sergei's imposing presence. Warm Activities for Adults at the Library

As we settle into the cold winter days ahead, thoughts turn to activities that are warm. The Morton Grove Public Library offers a number of activities that fit the bill.

Have you ever thought about knitting a warm scarf or hat for yourself or a loved one? Every Monday afternoon at 3:00 pm, you can join others as beginners learn a new craft and experienced knitters provide support and guidance to the newbies. Join Ronnie Rund in the Activity Room on the lower level as she teaches and lends support in this wonderful hobby.

If knitting isn't your cup of tea, join the monthly Scrabble and Chess for Adults program. This month it will be held on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 from 2:00 - 4:00 pm in the Estelle Cooperman Conference Room on the second floor of the Library. Drop in and play a game or two or three! We also offer a Chess Club and Class that has expanded to
include all family members, beginners and experienced players. Drop-in to learn or play and bring the family. The next Chess Club is scheduled for Tuesday, February 1, 2011 from 4:00 - 5:30 pm in the Activity Room on the lower level.

Lyric Opera Lecture Series: Girl of the Golden West

Larry Lapidus of the Lyric Opera of Chicago will present a profile of Giacomo Puccini’s love story, Girl of the Golden West, on Sunday, January 16, 2011 from 2:00 - 3:00 pm.

Minnie is the pistol-packing, poker-playing proprietress of the Polka Saloon and every miner in camp hopes to claim her, even Sheriff Rance. However, the Girl of the Golden West is in love with a tall dark stranger – the bank robber Ramerrez in disguise. Chicago Museums offer Free Winter Admissions

As many of you know, Morton Grove Public Library participates in the Macy's Museum Adventure Pass program offering free admission to a number of suburban museums. This program is wildly popular but, as with any museum program, some popular museums are not participants, museums like the Art Institute of Chicago, the Shedd Aquarium, etc.

This month several of the popular Chicago Museums are offering free admission. The Art Institute of Chicago is offering free weekday admission from January 3 until February 4, all day long including late evenings.

The Field Museum of Natural History is offering a number of free days in January and February: January 3rd, 11th, 13th, 18th, 19th, 24th, 26th, and 31st, February 2nd, 3rd, 8th, 9th, 14th, 15th, and 17th.

The Shedd Aquarium is offering free admission during the week of January 16 - 21 and February 15 - 19.

Free admission days to the Museum of Science and Industry include weekdays in January and February 1st, 8th, 14th, 15th, and 22nd.

Chicago Transit Authority Will Launch The Train Tracker Pilot Program In January

Total Lunar Eclipse of December 21, 2010

Great news for Morton Grove!! The Land of Nod, the children's furniture, toy and accessories retailer is moving its headquarters to Morton Grove. The company is moving from Northbrook to the River North Corporate Park and expanding its office space by 50%, according to Crain's. Lincoln Avenue - Looking Good!

The conventional wisdom in town is that are two seasons: winter and construction. With the arrival of December, we're finally seeing the end of the construction season.

This year, Morton Grove has seen a lot of road work, especially as citizens tried to reach the Library, but good news is at hand! Lincoln Avenue is now open to traffic, new street light fixtures are already in operation and we can start to see how it will look next year when the many landscape plants are in full bloom.

And did you know that the Village has some surprises in store for all its residents, including the four-footed furry ones? There is a new drinking fountain in front of the Fire Station at Lincoln and Callie, equipped to serve adults, kids -- and dogs! It seems that a suggestion was made to think about our four-footed friends in the planning for Lincoln Avenue and our elected officials took it seriously. So next spring, we will be enjoying the new look of Lincoln Avenue, including our pets.

Flu Shots at the Morton Grove Public Library

CVS Pharmacy staff will be administering seasonal flu shots in the Baxter Auditorium of the Morton Grove Public Library from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Cost for the flu shot will be $29.99.

This year’s influenza vaccine contains three new influenza virus strains. They are:

A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)-like virus (the same strain as was used for 2009 H1N1 monovalent vaccines);
A/Perth/16/2009 (H3N2)-like virus;
B/Brisbane 60/2008-like antigens.

The 2010-11 influenza vaccine can protect you from getting sick from these three viruses, or it can make your illness milder if you get a related but different influenza virus strain.

It’s especially important that the following groups get vaccinated either because they are at high risk of having serious flu-related complications or because they live with, visit or care for people at high risk for developing flu-related complications:

Pregnant women
Children younger than 5, but especially children younger than 2 years old
People 50 years of age and older
People of any age with certain chronic medical conditions
People who live in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities
People who live with or care for those at high risk for complications from flu, including:
- Health care workers

National Gaming Day

The Morton Grove Public Library is participating in the annual National Gaming Day, an initiative of the American Library Association and local libraries, on Saturday, November 13, 2010 beginning at 10:00 am.

Dress as a rock star and join your fellow gamers to play Rock Band from 10:00 to 11:00 am or come dressed to play Wii bowling from 11:00 to noon. Of course, you can participate if you not in costume.

For the less adventurous game lovers, we will have board games available for you to challenge your friends and family. Open to all ages.

Are You a Veteran?

Does anyone remember why we celebrate Veterans Day on November 11? The day was first celebrated on November 30, 1919 when President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the first Armistice Day but an Act of Congress approved on May 13, 1938 made the 11th of November in each year "a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as 'Armistice Day'. In 1953, a campaign was started to honor all veterans and Congress approved that bill and it was signed into law by President Eisenhower on May 26, 1954. On June 1, 1954 Congress amended the law to change "Armistice" to "Veterans", and the federal holiday has been known as Veterans Day ever since.

This year the Morton Grove Historical Museum, American Legion Post 134, Morton Grove Senior and Family Services, the North Shore Senior Center of Morton Grove, and the Morton Grove Public Library are sponsoring the Veterans History Project. Are you a veteran and interested in having relating stories of your military service, please consider joining the Veterans History Project. Call 847-965-0203 to schedule an interview. Rock 'n Roll Lives

Do you remember the music of the 1960s? As the Program Director and disc jockey at WLS Radio in Chicago, Clark Weber chose the music that was played on the 50,000 watt rock and roll giant from 1955-1975. On Tuesday, November 9, 2010 beginning at 11:30 am join your fellow music-lovers as Clark Weber tells some of the stories about the music and the people who made it that you've never heard before.

Clark Weber's new book has 200 photos and a special CD that will take you back in time to those fun years. After his presentation, he will sign copies of his book.

Skype - Connecting with Friends & Family

Did you know that you can reach out and touch someone anywhere in the world via Skype? Skype is software that allows you to make free voice calls over the Internet. The Morton Grove Public Library is offering a number of workshops to help you set up a Skype account and learn how to use Skype at home but, if you don't have a computer at home and still want to contact your family or friends, the Library will be offering the "Skype Lounge" on Saturday, December 11 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. You can sign-up for a 15-minute session at the Reference Services Desk, by phone at 847-929-5101, or e-mail us at info@webrary.org.

Time to Fall Back

Daylight Saving Time ends this Sunday, November 7 at 2 a.m. Don't forget to turn your clocks back one hour before going to bed on Saturday. The law changed in 2007 with daylight time begining in the United States on the second Sunday in March and ending on the first Sunday in November as part of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, Pub. L. no. 109-58, 119 Stat 594 (2005).

But don't despair, we will spring forward an hour on Sunday March 13, 2011.

The Cove - Academy Award Winning Documentary Film

On Sunday, November 7, 2010 at 3:00 pm the Morton Grove Public Library will be showing the Academy Award-winning documentary film, The Cove, in the Baxter Auditorium. The Cove was filmed using state-of-the-art equipment, follow a group of activists, led by renowned dolphin trainer Ric O'Barry, as they infiltrate a cove near Taijii, Japan to expose both a shocking instance of animal abuse and a serious threat to human health. The film is rated PG-13 and runs 96 minutes.
